On Saturday, Sept. 26, Sleep in Heavenly Peace Dawsonville will host a “Bunks Across America” bed-building event, in an effort to get needy children in north Georgia a bed to sleep in.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapter president Skip Sevier said that his group has participated in bed builds before, but that this one will look different from past builds due to COVID-19 precautions.
‘We’ve restocked masks, hand sanitizer and materials with which we can sanitize our tools between uses,” Sevier said. “We’ve redesigned our building plan to allow for social distancing and we’re eager to start this thing up!”
The event on Sept. 26 will be part of a nationwide “bed build” called Bunks Across America. Local chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace will gather all over the nation to build beds, which will be donated to those who can’t afford a bed to sleep in. The goal of the organization is to, “end child bedlessness and ensure that no kid sleeps on the floor of our town”, according to the Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization’s nationwide website.
“The most profound way to end the national crisis of child bedlessness is to unite the country in one common goal of building the most amount of beds possible and getting thousands of children off the floor,” the website says. “[Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s] goal is to build over 7,000 beds with up to 15,000 volunteers.”
For the local chapter in Dawsonville, Sevier said the goal is to start small, stay safe and have a little fun while uniting for a common purpose.
“We’re asking our folks to bring a lawn chair and to gather safely in our large yard,” Sevier said, “and we’ll rotate folks in and out of our assembly line as they’d like to.”
All tools for the build will be provided and will be sanitized frequently. Hand sanitizer and masks will be provided as well.
The build will be held at 1351 Rider Road, Dawsonville GA 30534 and starts at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 26, 2020.For more information on Sleep in Heavenly Peace Dawsonville, visit https://www.shpbeds.org/chapter/ga-dawsonville.
