A poker run Saturday will help a local organization raise funds for area children.

KARE for Kids Third Annual Motorcycle Poker Run revs up at Longhorn Steakhouse in Dawsonville for a 10 a.m. departure.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and breakfast will be available.

The ride winds through the North Georgia Mountains, making five stops on a 52 mile stretch of road before returning to Dawsonville for lunch at the Dawsonville Pool Room, where the winning hand will be announced.

Organizer Carl Volk, a member of KARE for Kids board of directors, said riders will experience “some beautiful countryside” during the ride.

Prizes will be given for the first, second and third best hands from cards collected at each stop on the ride.

Volk called last year’s event “a raging success. So much so that we sold out of our T-shirts and had to reorder more.”

Limited edition T-shirts will also be available this year.

The registration fee is $25 per bike and $10 per passenger.

In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled for March 26.

KARE for Kids is a non-profit organization that provides hundreds of local children with clothing, medication, eyeglasses and school supplies each year.

The volunteer group also puts together Dawsonville’s largest event of the year, the annual Mountain Moonshine Festival, which funds the group’s initiative to provide Christmas gifts to Dawson County children in need.
