Locals take leap for literacy

Dawson County residents are being told to go "jump in a lake," but for a good cause.

The third annual Leap for Literacy will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at War Hill Park.

The event benefits Dawson County WEE Books, a program developed to put age-appropriate books in the hands of preschool children.

Those who are taking the leap into the lake are participating as parts of teams or as individuals.

"There will be some brave people jumping in the lake, toe tapping or ramp-running," said Jane Graves, a long-time volunteer with the nonprofit. "Come along as a spectator and watch the nonsense."

Supporters will raise money to purchase books for local children. The jumpers will come dressed in costumes and ready to give a performance to entice more donations from the crowd in the form of sponsorships.

There will be performances and people will dress up," said Graves. "And don't worry - we will have the dive team on site."

Judges will be on hand to give awards for categories such as most creative costume, funniest routine and oldest and youngest jumpers.
