Members and volunteers at Christ Fellowship Church in Dawsonville pack Thanksgiving meal boxes for families in need.

Many members of the Dawson County community stepped up during the week of Thanksgiving to bring food and holiday cheer to those in need. Last week one group, the Christ Fellowship Church Care Team, distributed 169 Thanksgiving meal boxes, serving over 620 people.

For their special distribution effort the week of Thanksgiving, the CFCares Team added a turkey or ham plus vegetables, dessert and drinks for each family in addition to the customary staple food items they distribute through their normal Food Center.

As a component of its local missions efforts, Christ Fellowship Church provides supplemental meal necessities for families in need through their Food Center. The center began operating in May, and their client base has steadily grown to include over 300 families from Dawson and surrounding counties. The Food Center is open every Thursday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and is at 139 Hightower Pkwy. in Dawsonville.

In order to coordinate the event, staff had over 50 volunteers working throughout the day from early morning through the evening. The congregation is mission-focused and had collected food items for several weeks.

Church members said they were tremendously grateful to their friends at The Place for their generosity to help them pull off the event, and are very thankful to many area businesses for their support, including Kroger, Wal-Mart, Ingles, Big D's BBQ, Culvers and Chick-fil-A.
