Library is accepting food for fines

The Chestatee Regional Library is offering library patrons a chance to do away with their fines by helping out a good cause.

Throughout November, Dawson and Lumpkin County libraries will accept two cans or boxes of non-perishable food for each $1 of fines.

"The library has been doing the Food for Fines drive for over 10 years," said Dawson County Library Branch Manager Stacey Leonhardt. "We donate the can goods to the RIC Rack Food Pantry."

The food collected will be used to remove fines from items owned by, checked out from and returned to the Dawson and Lumpkin libraries.

"People respond to the program because it allows them to pay off their fines and help people in need at the same time," Leonhardt said. "Often times, our patrons will simply make a donation of canned goods and do not have fines to pay, they simply want to help."

The program runs through Nov. 26.
