In an effort to keep kids safe and to raise awareness of a problem not often talked about, Dawson County Family Connection will be holding classes to raise awareness of child sexual abuse.

"We believe adults should be taking proactive steps to protect children, and learn how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse," said Family Connection Director Nancy Stites.

Over the next five months, Family Connection will be offering Stewards of Children classes in order to help adults in the community spot signs of child sexual abuse. The classes will be held once a month and are open to the general public.

This is the same training the entire Dawson County Sheriff's Office staff took in May. The classes were taken in an effort to "start leading the way in the county for this training," according to Sheriff Billy Carlisle.

Stites said that the classes are flexible in location, depending on the need.

"You can schedule training for your staff, neighborhood friends or club members," she said. "We'll come to you, no group is too small."
