An event Thursday at the Margie Weaver Senior Center is intended to keep older adults safe from criminals.

Coffee with a Cop starts at 1 p.m. and will cover topics that teach seniors how to avoid being a victim of crime.

"We seem to hear more often these days of individuals trying to scam seniors out of money and take advantage of those less fortunate," said Dawn Pruett, senior center director. "By hosting an event, I am hoping that seniors are more aware of the different crimes that are out there."

Capt. Tony Wooten with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office will conduct the free seminar that is open to all seniors.

"In the past, we've had seniors that were targeted by criminals, who have said they wanted to do work, but when they got inside their homes, they turned out to be scammers and robbed them," he said. "People work their whole lives to have a retirement and people come and take advantage of them.

"Maybe we'll be able to talk to them about ways to avoid being scammed."

Coffee and snacks will be served.
