Dawsonville man killed in Lake Chatuge boating collision
Lake Lanier

A Dawsonville man was killed Saturday in a boating collision on Lake Chatuge in Towns County, according to Mark McKinnon, public affairs officer with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

McKinnon said in an email that two bass boats collided at approximately 7:15 a.m. March 16 after a bass finishing tournament launched at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds boat ramp. McKinnon said one vessel turned into the path of the other vessel, causing the collision.

Danny Duff, 59, of Dawsonville was pronounced dead March 16 by the Towns County Coroner.

Duff was operating the vessel that made the turn. A passenger in his boat received minor injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The operator and passenger of the other boat were not injured.

No charges were filed, and the DNR Law Enforcement Critical Incident Reconstruction Team (CIRT) is investigating the incident.

“The investigation will take six to eight weeks to complete and no additional information will be available until then,” McKinnon said.
