A Dawson County man died Sunday from injuries sustained in a head-on collision near his home a week before.

Funeral services for Raymond "Jerry" Waters, 68, will be held today Bearden Funeral Home.

Waters was critically injured May 2 when the truck he was driving on Hwy. 136 West, just before Bailey Waters Road, collided with another truck.

Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone identified the driver of the second truck as 31-year-old Matthew Nelson Turner of Gainesville.

Both men were airlifted to trauma centers in Atlanta.

Stone said that Waters had chest and spinal injuries.

Turner reportedly suffered injuries to his lower extremities.

According to Stone, the trucks collided head-on after Turner "failed to negotiate a curve," crossing the center line and traveling onto the shoulder of the westbound lane.

Stone said the investigation is ongoing.

"We cannot comment on charges at this time," she said.

Last week's fatal crash was the second serious injury wreck near the intersection in the last few weeks.

"With two serious wrecks in the same general area, we're going to increase our patrols," said Dawson County Sheriff's Maj. Greg Rowan. "It's definitely become a trouble spot."

Waters' death marks the county's third fatality on local roads since the beginning of the year.
