Dawson County School Superintendent Keith Porter made the call just after 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to cancel classes for Wednesday.

Schools were also closed all day Tuesday due to the threat of severe winter weather, a measure that proved to be the safest alternative after snow began to fall by 10 a.m.

By 2 p.m., emergency workers, who continue to work numerous wrecks across Dawson County, had issued warnings for motorists to stay off local roads if at all possible.

Flurries fell most of the day and into the afternoon with up to two and a half inches of snow reported in Dawson County.
