Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services along with state agencies are currently searching for a missing hiker.

According to a Facebook post from DCES, Eddie Noonkester began a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail on Friday, Feb. 14 and he has since become disoriented and may be suffering from a medical emergency.

“It is believed that he is on or near the AT approach trail somewhere in Dawson County, however it is also possible that he has wandered off the trail and surrounding National Forest or Park property,” the post reads.

Anyone who comes across someone matching his description is asked to call 911.

As of 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, DCES has found what is believed to be his gear and is narrowing the search area.

Lumpkin, Gilmer and Fannin county authorities are assisting with the search.

Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said Monday afternoon that K9 units are on the ground assisting with the search.
