Christmas for Critters first year a success

The inaugural run of Shannon Porter's charity Christmas for Critters held its final supply pick up Friday.

Shannon, 11, and her mother, Cindy Lord, tallied the results and were pleased, according to Lord.

"Shannon raised over $200 in cash," Lord said.

The charity also collected more than 300 pounds combined of dog and cat food, 25 boxes/bags of dog and cat treats, a couple dozen leashes/collars, kitten milk, several dog and cat toys, more than 60 pounds of cat litter, scratching posts and dog bandanas.

Also collected were numerous bottles of cleaning products, sanitizer and disinfectants, as well as pet grooming products.

"Debora Maxwell [director of the local humane society], was very pleased and the Dawson County Humane Society was grateful for such a large donation," said Lord. "Shannon and I feel that the fundraiser was a great success."

Porter has previously worked with Maxwell and the society by volunteering her time for both fundraisers and work at the society.

"It went over my expectations. I was really surprised." said Porter. "I want to start earlier next year and see if we can get more businesses involved and get more stuff next year than we did this year. If this thing grows, maybe we can help other counties' humane societies, too."

The idea for the charity drive was all Porter's, said her mother.

Christmas for Critters came about when Porter noticed that there were no charities to help homeless animals.

"I told Shannon how very proud of her I am," said Lord. "Her entire family is proud."

"I just want to thank everyone who contributed and allowed us to leave a drop box in their business," said Porter. "We really appreciate what you did and all of your help."
