A dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. today in downtown Dawsonville to commemorate Georgians in the Union Army.

In partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the event is part of the Georgia Historical Society's statewide commemoration of the Civil War's 150th anniversary.

The society is conducting a program across the state to unveil new and recently replaced historical markers that explore the stories of Georgia's Civil War history.

John Inscoe, University of Georgia history professor and editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia, will give the keynote address at the service that will be held on the town square, outside Dawson County's historic courthouse.

The Dawson County commission approved the placement of the Civil War marker in July at the request of the local historical society.

The community is invited to attend the dedication.
