Each year, Dawson County Emergency Services and Sheriff's Office alternates who will perform the memorial service in remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

This year, emergency services will be hosting the event at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Fire Station No. 1 at 393 Memory Lane.

According to Lanier Swafford, chief of Dawson County Emergency Services, the service is done to honor those who have and currently selflessly serve as an emergency response worker.

"Sept. 11 is one of the most defining moments in our nation's history for this generation and the sacrifices that day and since by our military and homeland security forces - fire, EMS, emergency management, 911 and law enforcement - should never be forgotten," Swafford said.

The ceremony is Dawson County's emergency response workers' way of continuing the commitment to "never forget," an event that will forever stay with the lives of every American, not just those who worked the area or had brothers- and sisters-in-arms that did.

"It created a new level of threats, and along with that needs for awareness and security each and every day and on each and every call," Swafford said. "We never know what situations we will be responding into."
