Battery recycling soon will be available free of charge at the Dawson County Transfer Station.

Beginning June 4, county residents can dispose of single-use batteries that will be recycled to keep hazardous materials such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel out of landfills.

Keep Dawson County Beautiful Chairwoman Karen Armstrong encourages the community to take advantage of the free service.

"It is our responsibility to think about our environment and help balance it out by recycling," she said.

The metals from the recycled batteries will be reused to make new batteries.

"By recycling alkaline batteries, we are one step closer to enriching, stabilizing and beautifying our environment for future generations," Armstrong said.

Only alkaline household batteries will be accepted at this time.

For safety reasons, plastic bags will be provided on-site to place the batteries in before depositing them in the recycling bin provided.

The Dawson County Transfer Station and Recycling Center is at 946 Burt Creek Road, Dawsonville.
