Dr. Anderson: Every morning I wonder

The Great Gettin’ Up Morning is just around the corner. When I get up each morning I look to the East at the risin’ sun. I always wonder if this is going to be the day that COVID leaves Dawson County.

We now are having several days in a row of no new cases. When we do have cases it is usually one or two, and never out of single digits. We now have only six people in the county with COVID-19.

For those who got the vaccine, I would like to say a very heartfelt thank you. For those of you who still decline to get the vaccine, I will say you could have been more helpful.

My wife questioned me when I proposed paying people to take the vaccine so we could hasten the demise of COVID-19. Pay people to take something free that could improve their health or possibly save their life? Well, let us look at some history.

President Jimmy Carter used the Carter Center for a very helpful and noble event. Free vaccines for Atlanta’s inner-city children. Nobody came. Must be a transportation problem. Free Marta Tokens. Nobody came. Hmm… Free McDonald’s gift certificate.  Standing room only.  Today, West Virginia will place your name in a lottery for firearms if you get the vaccine. Some states have million-dollar lotteries for getting the vaccine. Some hospitals are paying their employees to get the vaccine. Health insurance companies are paying their clients to get blood pressure and lipid check. My favorite one is getting marijuana stores to have vaccine clinics and give away a free pre-rolled joint.

I do not understand the need for all the giveaways. Let’s do this: get your driver’s license out and look at it. If your license is printed horizontally then it means you are 21 or older. Now is the time to start acting like it. Do the buttercup thing, roll up your sleeve and take the shot.

Over 300 million doses have been given to Americans and guess what, they are still alive. Take the shot.
