Dawson County golfers, Charley Whitmire and Wesley Bearden, placed 5th and 6th respectively in a tournament held at Chestatee Golf Club on July 7.

The event was part of the Atlanta Junior Golf Association, which conducts golf tournaments throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia during the summer.

This summer, the Atlanta Junior Golf Association will provide 80 events and more than 7,000 rounds of golf in 29 Georgia counties for youth interested in participating in tournament golf, including beginner, 9-hole and 18-hole events.

Boys and girls, registered as members, are eligible to participate in tournaments throughout the year as a fall season also exists for players to work on their games for nine months of the year.

Whitmire shot a 9-hole score of 40 to finish at 4 over par. The tournament was shortened to 9-holes due to inclement weather.

The former DCHS player got in trouble with four straight bogeys on holes five through eight.

Winning the Open 18 and under event was Camryn Cole of Gainesville High School. Cole came in with an even par 36 to take the title.

On the 18 and under boys side, Bearden shot a 18-hole total of 76 to finish in a tie for 6th place with Jason Terranova from Marietta.

The Dawsonville native shot an even par over the first five holes. Bearden’s game took a turn for the worst when he shot back-to-back bogies on holes six and seven and then again on holes ten and eleven to fall out of contention.

Bearden did come back to birdie hole number 15.

Bearden will be a junior for Coach Van Samples this year at DCHS.

Taking first place for the boys was Shea Sylvester from Roswell. The 14-year old shot an 18-hole total of 72, one over par.

On July 9th Bearden entered another Atlanta Junior Tournament at Hard Labor Creek Golf Club.

Bearden finished in 14th place coming in with a 15 over par round of 87.
