The Dawson County High School team members Tristan Melton and Cameron Hudson reeled in second place during the 2014 Georgia State High School Fishing Championship May 3.

Open to any high school fishing team in the state, the championship event on Lake Lanier in Gainesville was sponsored by The Bass Federation and FLW, the world's largest tournament-fishing organization.

Using top water lures and worms, the pair brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 16 pounds, 3 ounces for the runner-up finish. Darrell Strayhorn captained the boat.

"We were all really excited to be in the top 10. There were 52 boats in the tournament, so to be in the top 10 is great. We really hope to do well in nationals and doing good for Georgia," Melton said.

They also won the Fishing Education Award and advanced to the Southeastern Region Fishing Championship to be held in September in Tennessee.

"This was a great experience, to compete against other teams in the state tournament," Melton said.

For the school's first year competing, Melton said the entire team was proud of its accomplishments.

"We are looking forward to competing next year, too, going against new teams. Doing this good this year, it really showed that we can go against these teams that have had fishing teams for years," he said.

North Forsyth High School's Cole Cloud and Ronnie Warsop won the championship for their five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 13 ounces. They now advance to the High School Fishing Conference Championship.

Dawson County High School's Cody Warren and Hunter Glover took home seventh place with five bass at 12 pounds, 11 ounces, while Evan Jennings and Brice Henson finished ninth with five bass at 12 pounds, 10 ounces.

Tucker Welling and Taylor Addis finished in 23rd place with five bass weighing in at 9 pounds, 6 ounces.

Also representing Dawson County were Lane Venters, Jessie Ray, Eli Bradley, Matt Reeves, Cade Perry and Hunter Lebaron.

The 2014 Georgia State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person event for students in grades 9-12.

The top 10 percent from each state championship field advances to a High School Fishing Conference Championship along with the top three teams from each of the six 2014 High School Fishing Opens that coincide with the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour.
