One young girl from the Dawson County area is a real straight shooter — and she’s got the marks to prove it.

She tallied a near perfect score last week at a National Collegiate Athletic Association competition.

Mattie Brogdon, a junior at Texas Christian University, competed with air rifle teammates against West Virginia University on Oct. 26 and beat the No. 1 ranked school.

During the match, she scored a 592 — with 600 being a perfect score. It was an all-time high score, she said.

“I just took my time and focused on each shot,” said the 20-year-old.

Brogdon became interested in shooting rifles in fifth grade, she said.

“I like that it’s a co-ed sport,” she said. “They don’t segregate between guys and girls. You’re equals, and the most skilled person wins.”

She added that to be the best shot, it all comes down to “the ability to be patient and be very still.”

Because of her high score and her contribution to the team’s victory, Brogdon was also named athlete of the week on Oct. 26 at Texas Christian University.
