I tend to think of the passage of time in regard to sporting events. Holidays, in my brain are automatically associated with whatever game is on, and there is always a game.
Thanksgiving equals football. Christmas is the basketball holiday., Valentine’s Day is close enough to the Super Bowl that it is actually really convenient, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs usually mark my birthday.
Occasionally, I find myself measuring my day by the length of games, such as… a standard football game is roughly four hours long, so if I want a shot at seeing the second half, I have to leave wherever I am by this very specific time.
Unless one of the teams call time-out. Then all bets are off because time-out time is different.
The end result is that I’m always taken by surprise when I realize that an actual length of time has passed.
In this case, it has been one-year since I joined the Dawson County News and began covering the high school sports beat.
Sitting here thinking about this year, I have to say, it has been a heck of a year. A good year, but a wild ride.
Let’s be honest, I have a pretty good job. I watch, read and talk about sports (always with someone who knows more than I do about them, which is wonderful) and then I write about sports. I am enjoying it thoroughly.
What most people don’t realize is that this isn’t just my first year with this paper, it is my first year with any paper, and I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your guidance, patience and input as I have worked at my new craft these 12 months.
I mean that, sincerely.
Your children are kind, courteous and respectful. The love that pours from the coaching community translates not only into great sports but great people, and the support and dedication of the parents has sustained this attitude through generations of athletes.
And even when I have found myself on the wrong side of my words and facts, for the most part, that kindness and respect continued as you were quick with corrections.
It has been a wonderful place to start something new. Thank you.
I am looking very forward to the starting the journey again. It begins in 53 days, one hour, 5 minutes and 30 seconds, 29 seconds, 28 seconds…
