Wrestling team to rely on experience

After yet another successful season for the Dawson County Tigers wrestling program, Coach Arron Haynes said that what was a young team is now finally a group with experience.

“This group is finally getting old,” Haynes said. “We have had youth for several years with just a sprinkling of seniors, but now we have experience.”

Though the team graduated a strong group of seniors including state runner-up Jeremy Whalen, he is counting on a new group of leaders.

“Every year we have guys move into the roles that seniors leave vacant and then younger ones fill the new holes that are left void,” Haynes said. “Last year's seniors will be a tough group to replace, but we have a group that has been pretty good since they were first getting into the program and they are now almost grown so I feel like they will pick up the challenge of replacing the seniors and going even farther.”

The captain this year is junior Levi Baggett who was voted in by the team at the end of last season. Remaining captains will be voted on after about a month of practices which will begin on Oct. 23.

Wyatt Smith, who finished fifth in the state, will also return along with Kelton LeBaron who placed eighth.

“Though they wrestle as individuals, people often do not realize just how much of a team sport wrestling really is so we do rely heavily on quality leadership in the program and at mastoid,” he said.

Practices are allowed beginning the 23rd as regulated by the Georgia High School Association but weight certification will take place the weekend prior.

Several of the boys from the team have been working together at local gyms to practice and get in shape, according to Haynes.

“I think they will be chomping at the bit when the 23rd rolls around,” he said.

Junior wrestler Kevin Arias was in a 4th of July weekend accident that claimed the life of Lambert student Eliza Farrell and is working to come back from injuries he sustained.

“He has been one of the hardest workers in the program over the last couple of years and to see that destroyed by someone outside the program that made a horrible choice is just very disheartening,” Haynes said. "However we are very hopeful that Kevin will be able to eventually return. It looks like he will be cleared for his senior year, but maybe we will get him some action late in the season.

“I do know that if anyone can come back from this, it will Be Kevin and I know his teammates will be instrumental in his recovery, pushing him all the way.”

Haynes has high expectations for this year’s program and will count on the experience of this squad.

“I feel like we should once again be one of the top teams in the area if we can retain our focus. Right now we have some pretty dang good wrestlers with a lot of heart and that combination goes a long way on the mat,” he said.

The program is currently looking for both individual and business sponsors for the team or individual wrestlers. To get more information, contact Haynes through the high school at (706) 265-6555.
