Wrestlers finish third

The Dawson County High School wrestling team finished in third place at the Area 3 duals at Woodward Academy last weekend.

The Tigers narrowly missed out on a state playoff spot after losing to Woodward, 54-15, and McNair High School, 41-30.

The Tigers defeated St. Pius, 46-29, Blessed Trinity, 54-25, Fannin County, 61-18, Pike County, 78-3 and Jackson, 78-6.

Against St. Pius several Tigers picked up wins by way of pin: Justin Evans (106 pounds), Anthony Underwood (113 pounds), Levi Pressley (145 pounds), Brett Whalen (182 pounds) and Colton Chester (220 pounds).

Harrison Adams (126 pounds) won his match over Gaelen Athanaze by a 5-0 decision. Also winning by decision was Cory Jenkins (132 pounds) in a close, 6-4, win over Joseph Twiner.

Picking up points by forfeit were Keaton Toal (195 pounds) and Harley Vaughn (285 pounds).

In the win over Blessed Trinity, once again several Tigers won their matches by pinning their opponents. This includes Evans (106 pounds), Jonathan Steele (120 pounds), Jenkins (132 pounds), Harrison Adams (126 pounds), Kells (170 pounds), Gavin Brown (182 pounds), Whalen (195 pounds), Jacob Haberkam (220 pounds) and Vaughn (285 pounds).

Dawson County will wrestle next at 5 p.m. Jan. 15 at Gilmer County High School.
