Fighting the elements and some good Class AAA teams, the Dawson County High School varsity Tigers baseball team went 1-2 last week.

Weather was an issue last week. On March 18, the Tigers were rained out against White County. The game was pushed back a day and was played on March 19 in Cleveland. Dawson County came out on the good end of a 4-3 win.

Head Coach Jimmy Pruett's Tiger team had to reload in order to play North Hall in Clermont on Wednesday. It was a cold, windy day and the Tigers were stymied by the Trojans 12-1.

The Tigers turned right around on Friday and played the Trojans (10-1, 6-0) under cloudy skies and unfavorable conditions to lose 15-0.

"I'm pleased with the way we played against White County," Pruett said. "On the other hand, we didn't play well against North Hall, but they are by far the best team we have seen so far."

Dawson County scored first against White County in the third inning on Tuesday. Colton Chester singled to begin the inning and was pinch run for. After a steal of second the runner was singled home.

The Warriors tied the score in the bottom of the inning at 1-1.

Pruett's team rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 advantage.

Mitchell Putnam reached first base on a fielder's choice. Putnam stole second base, which put a runner in scoring position. David Chester walked and Levi Whitmire followed with a double that scored Putnam. Chester and Whitmire also eventually scored.

White County scored two runs in the seventh inning, but their rally came to an end when relief pitcher, Elijah Fitts, came on to get the final out.

Logan Burt started the game for Dawson County and went two innings. JT Eggert came on in relief and pitched four and two-thirds with six strikeouts and two walks. Eggert picked up the win.

Dawson picked up the big Region 7-AAA win despite striking out 11 of the possible 21 outs during the game.

That seemed like a sore spot for Dawson County in their next two games against North Hall.

Trojan pitcher Preston Graham fanned 13 Tiger batters in a 12-1 win on March 20.

Dawson County could get nothing going on offense and managed two hits, doubles by Colton Chester and Brodie Chester, in the second inning on back-to-back hits with two outs.

"Graham is possibly the best pitcher we have seen all year," Pruett said.

Graham, a left-handed pitcher, also helped himself at the plate. Graham launched a two-out homerun over the left-centerfield fence to drive in three runs in the first inning. The Trojans scored eight runs in the inning.

The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

It was more of the same for the Tigers on Friday.

Trojan Lincoln Hewett hit a fifth inning grand slam to propel North Hall to a 15-0 win over the Tigers.

Once again, Dawson County managed just two hits against North Hall pitchers Colton Duttweiler and Adam Kelly.

For the second consecutive game, Friday's Region 7-AAA match-up was called due to the mercy rule.

Dawson County is currently 6-5 overall and 4-2 in region play.

Up this week for the Tigers is a trip to Banks County today and a home game with Fannin County on Friday. Both games will begin at 5:55 p.m.
