Walters prepares to defend title
Region meet Thursday

Dawson County High School senior Madalyn Walters is preparing to defend her Region 8-AA title Oct. 27 at Oglethorpe County High School in Lexington.

The meet will begin at 4:15 p.m.

Walters heads into the region meet as the number one contender with a Region 8-AA best time of 18:59.09.

She will be challenged by North Oconee runner Olivia Pigg.

Pigg's best time of the season is 19:39.30.

The Lady Tigers senior is also ranked third overall in AA and 29th overall in all classifications in the state.

Her Lady Tigers teammate Rachel Gloeckner is also having a good season. Gloeckner is currently ranked at number 12 in Region 8-AA with a time of 21:38.

Dawson will have to have several runners post great times in order to win the region meet. Last season the Lady Tigers finished in third place.

The Lady Tigers have a good chance at placing in the meet. The team boasts four other runners who are placed in the top 50 in Region 8-AA: Morgan Collett (24), Morgan Williams (26), Savannah Estes (30) and Cassidy Lecours (34).

Region 8-AA boasts five teams in the top 10 in the state's AA rankings. Jackson County (4th), Jefferson (5th), East Jackson (6th), North Oconee (7th) and Dawson (9th) all have a chance at a region title.

On the boys' side, John Erickson will lead the Tigers at the Region meet. Erickson is ranked 14th in the region with a time of 17:51.77.

Erickson is closely followed in the top 50 rankings in Region 8-AA by Tiger teammates: Chris Bywaletz (15), Tyler Thurmond (16), Preston Adams (27), Josh Styles (33), Jake Hafermalz (35) and Sam Wentworth (49).

The Tigers will be running against some top teams in the state.

Just like the girls, there are five teams ranked in the top 10 from Region 8-AA. The region is led by North Oconee (4th), East Jackson (5th), Hart County (6th) and Jefferson (7th).

The Tigers are currently ranked number nine.

Justin Whitman from Oglethorpe County has posted the best 3.1-mile time in the region this year at 16:43.76.

Hart County runner, Ross Morris, is close behind Whitman with a time of 16:45.82.
