The Dawson County High School varsity baseball team started its season Thursday with a 9-2 loss against Forsyth Central.

Despite the loss, according to coaches this year could be a banner year for the Tigers. The team moved up a classification to Region 7-AAA and will play the likes of Buford, North Hall, West Hall and White County.

Head Coach Jimmy Pruett is entering his 19th year at the helm of the program.

"If our pitching staff comes around we could be there at the end. I like our team and we have a wealth of experience," he said.

Last season the Tigers managed a 12-12 record playing in Region 8-AA.

Eight of nine starters returned to Pruett's team.

"I feel with the veterans coming back and a good group of young players we can be competitive," he said.

Key players for the Tigers will include: Hunter Wehunt at first and third base, Colton Chester at catcher, pitchers Logan Burt and Jeffrey Partington, shortstop Levi Whitmire and outfielders David Chester and Mitchell Putnam.

The Tigers will take the field at 5:55 p.m. today at Lumpkin County.
