Tennis team in full swing

The Dawson County High School tennis team's season is in full swing.

The boys and girls teams have improved each week this season in preparation for the Region 7-AAA tournament in mid-April.

On March 19 the Tigers swept East Hall at home. The girls didn't give up a match and won 5-0, while the boys pulled through 3-2.

Winning for the Lady Tigers were Hannah Velcoff over Star Hogan, 6-0; 6-0 at number one singles.

At number two singles Lauren Morgan defeated Beverly Tellez, 6-0; 6-0. Number three singles player Victoria Sousa won 6-0; 6-0 over Yosselin Aparicio.

The doubles teams of Makienze Hambe and Miranda Abe won 6-1; 6-0. At number two doubles Abby Brown and Madison Shope won easily 6-0; 6-0.

Pulling out wins for the boys were Jeremiah Freelund at number two singles winning 6-2; 6-1.

At number three singles Craig Butler defeated Jonathan Morales in three sets, 7-6; 5-7; 6-4.

Deciding the match at number two doubles were the pairing of Dillard Blanton and Hayden Roper who pulled out a 6-3; 7-6 victory giving Dawson County in the match.

The second set in the Blanton-Roper match came down to a tie breaker. The team was down 6-3 but rallied to win the tie breaker 8-6.

Thursday saw both teams travel to Oakwood to face a very tough West Hall team. The boys were defeated 5-0, while the girls lost 4-1.

The only win for the girls was at number one doubles. The partnership of Whitney Glover and Hannah Porter won 2-0.
