The Dawson Co. tennis team beat Chestatee High School 7-3 in a non-region match on Thursday, Feb. 25, to remain undefeated this season.

The boys team won three of their five matches and the girls won four. Brendan Swafford and Kayleigh Moon both played out of the first singles position. Swafford won in two sets to stay individually undefeated this season, and Moon won a tiebreaker round to 10 points.

Blake Smith shut her second singles opponent out. Second doubles team Avery Yarborough and Kenzie Stover only allowed their opponents one set in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Ben Swafford and Connor Scroggins fought hard but lost the second and third singles matches for the boys. Scroggins sent his match into a 10-point tiebreaker round but fell short with a final score of 10-7.

Needing to win both doubles matches to remain undefeated, first doubles team Sam Hulsey and Chase Cofield lost their first set but managed to come back and win 6-4 in their second set. The duo handled their tiebreaker with ease and won 10-4.

Tied 2-2, second double team Zach Friday and Grant Ledbetter won 7-5 in their first set but struggled throughout the second set and lost 6-2. Their thrilling tiebreaker was full of exchanging back-to-back points with Chestatee but they won 11-9 to remain undefeated as a doubles team on the season and to keep the Tigers undefeated.

Tuesday’s match against Johnson High School in Oakwood was canceled while Johnson’s team dealt COVID-19 complications and quarantines.

The undefeated Tigers play a true challenge on Tuesday, March 2, against North Forsyth High School. The match is at North Forsyth and starts at 4 p.m.
