The Dawson County High School varsity baseball team recorded several firsts for the season on opening day Feb. 19.

The team picked up its first win of the season, head coach Thad Burgess picked up his first win as coach and pitcher Logan Burt recorded his first win from the mound.

"I saw a lot of excitement in our players and fans. It was good to get out on the field against another team and get some type of feel of our team," Burgess said.

Burt had a day to remember against visiting Pickens County. He pitched five complete innings and allowed no hits before being removed with a 6-0 lead by Burgess. The senior recorded 13 strikeouts while only walking three batters.

JT Eggert came on in relief to get the final six outs.

Burt also contributed offensively. He went 3-for-3 at the plate, with a double. In addition, Burt scored three runs.

The Tigers scored three runs in the third inning to open up a 4-0 lead over the Dragons. Zach Buchan highlighted the inning with a single to right center, driving in two runners, Burt and Harley Pruitt. Also scoring in the inning was Keaton Coates.

Dawson County scored a run in every inning with the exception of the second.

Dawson County will play at East Jackson today. The game is a make-up from Friday due to both basketball teams still playing in the state tournament. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Tigers will play March 1, dependent on state basketball schedules, at 2 p.m. at Chestatee.

The junior varsity team will play at 11 a.m., preceding the varsity game.
