The Dawson County Lady Tigers triumphantly finished their last game of the 2020 season on Thursday, Oct. 9, beating the Cherokee Bluff Bearcats 16-7.
Bella Henson and Rylie Erickson led the Lady Tigers offense, joining forces for three doubles and six runs batted in. Emily Kurtz also drove in two runs at the plate, while her sister Lauren Kurtz scored four runs on two hits.
Reese Moore started the game on the mound, throwing three innings allowing two earned runs and striking out two batters. Layne Bailey pitched the final two innings and earned strikeouts against four batters.
The announcer of Thursday’s victory recognized all seniors playing their last high school game with every at-bat throughout the night. The middle school softball team was also celebrated and walked out for the national anthem with their high school counterparts. The middle school team finished 7-5 and lost in the semi-finals of their region tournament against the eventual champions.
Overall, the Lady Tigers won seven games in the 2020 season. Bailey, Moore and Olivia Martinez were the only Lady Tigers to see time on the mound. Bailey pitched the most innings (58) and led the team with 39 strikeouts. Moore’s four victories led the team.
Henson led the team in multiple offensive categories: batting average (.369), home runs (4), runs scored (21), hits (24), and runs batted in (20). Martinez and Henson tied four the most doubles on the team (5) and Martinez had the second-highest batting average (.328), second-most hits (21), and second-most runs scored (20).
Bailey drove in the second most runs batted in (14) and had the third-highest batting average (.326). Bailey and Lauren Kurtz tied for the third most hits on the team (18). Kurtz scored the third most runs (18) and led the team at the leadoff spot with 12 stolen bases.
The Lady Tigers have five graduating seniors: Henson, Brea Crane, Marie Phillips, Alyssa Stroup and Laney Taylor.
