The Dawson County Lady Tigers softball team won their second game of the season on Thursday, Sept. 3 in a game against Rabun County.

The Lady Tigers took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. But after Rabun County scored a run in both the bottom of the first and bottom of the second, the Lady Tigers found themselves losing.

However, a nine-run top of the third play solidified that the Lady Tigers would win the game. They were able to tack on two extra runs in the later innings, but they would not need them. Rabun County could only score eight runs during the night, leaving the Lady Tigers with a 12-8 victory.

Emily Kurtz went 4-4 during the game, with a run batted in and two runs for herself. Her sister, Lauren Kurtz, went 2-5 at the plate with two runs batted in and scored three runs by herself, making the sister combo responsible for eight of the Lady Tigers’ runs.

Layne Bailey went 3-5 with a run batted in and Olivia Martinez went 2-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Alyssa Stroup had a pinch-hit single that drove in two runs and she came around to score herself. Anslee Kirby went 2-4 as well, making 14 hits for the Lady Tigers as a whole on the win.

Martinez pitched for the Lady Tigers, pitching for four innings and only allowing three earned runs on six hits. She walked three batters, but also struck out three. Bailey came in to pitch the remaining three innings allowing zero earned runs in her relief.

The Tigers victory capped off a week of softball for the Lady Tigers, who played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before their victory on Thursday. The Tigers lost all three previous games in close battles. They lost 4-1 to White County on Senior night, lost 6-4 Tuesday night against Gilmer County and 7-6 to Lumpkin County on Wednesday night.

Bailey and Bella Henson lead the team with seven runs batted in and Rylie Erickson leads the team with nine runs scored individually.

The Lady Tigers will play Wednesday, Sept. 9 at West Hall High school and will play at home Thursday, Sept. 10 against Cherokee Bluff High School.
