Softball: 10-day season extension announced by GHSA
GHSA

This week the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) announced an extension of the high school softball season due to multiple delays, suspensions and schedule droppings caused by COVID-19.

The GHSA Board of Trustees voted for the softball schedule to be pushed back by ten days, making the final date for any region play games Oct. 16. Previously, Dawson County’s latest game would have been held on Oct. 6.

“These changes were made in an effort to provide regions an extended period to best complete their region schedules,” GHSA Softball Coordinator Ernie Yarbrough said in the press release.

Under the new schedule, the GHSA 3-A tournament will be held Oct. 20 and 21 with the second round of play on Oct. 23 and 24. All classifications will play the 3rd round on Oct. 27 and 28.

The current plan is to still host an elite eight tournament with all 64 teams regions present at the same location on Oct. 30-31, but there will not be any opening ceremony. The site of the elite eight tournament has not been decided yet.

“The positive take at this point is that the schools will still have the opportunity to play a full season if they choose to,” Yarbrough said.
