Six Dawson County wrestlers qualified for the State Traditional Meet to be held this week in Macon.

Representing Dawsonville will be Harrison Adams (138-pounds), Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds), Brett Whalen (182-pounds), Gavin Brown (195-pounds), Justin Evans (113-pounds) and Ty Williams (heavyweight).

The wrestlers made it into the state round by their accomplishments at the East Sectionals at Morgan County High School in Madison last week.

The top eight finishers in each weight class advanced to the state tournament.

The highlight of the tournament was Adams capturing the championship in his weight group.

Adams defeated Jody McAlister from Morgan County in the championship match by way of pin.

The junior wrestler finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

With the four wins Adams is now 44-7 on the season.

On the path to the final match Adams defeated Jordan Williams from Jackson County in a forfeit, Michael Walker (Johnson) in a 13-8 decision, and Drake Dawson (Oconee County) in a close 4-2 win.

Senior Tiger Gavin Brown, who is the defending state champion at 182-pounds and has moved up a weight class this season, was defeated in the championship match by familiar foe Zach Matthews from Lumpkin County.

Brown and Matthews met in the finals of the Area tournament recently with the Tiger coming out on top in a close match.

It was much of the same Saturday afternoon with Matthews winning 3-1 in one of the most exciting matches of the day.

Brown went 3-1 in the tournament to move his overall season record to 41-5.

On the way to the championship match Brown defeated Justin Warnock (Dodge County) in a pin, Deshon Lester (Jefferson) 5-3, and Bryson Smith (Toombs County) 9-6.

Jeremy Whalen finished the tournament with a fourth place medal.

Whalen (38-33) was 3-2 with wins over LaXavier Twiggs (Laney) by pin, Jacob Danforth (Dodge County) 6-2, and Clayton Dykhouse (Banks County) 5-3. Whalen lost in the semi-finals to Luke Mitchell from Morgan County.

Coming in fifth place was Brett Whalen at 182-pounds. Whalen (35-15) won three matches over Tay Brown (Oconee County) 10-7, Devin Almond (Elbert County) by pin and Christian Erwin (West Hall) 2-0.

Senior Justin Evans made it to the state round with a win over Joshua Johnson from Brantley County in a pin.

Evans holds an impressive 38-11 record this season.

Ty Williams qualified for Dawson County in the heavyweight class. Williams, a senior, picked up wins over Marco Brown (Josey) by forfeit and Charles Knighton (Johnson) by a pin. Williams finished in eighth place and holds a 33-21 season record.

Also representing Dawson County at the sectionals were Gilbert Pruitt (152-pounds), Caine Wells (170-pounds) and Brenden Capps (220-pounds).
