The losing streak is over for Head Coach Jimmy Pruett and his Dawson County Tiger baseball team. After a five-run third inning, the Tigers rolled over Riverside Military Academy, 10-7, last Tuesday in Gainesville. The win put an end to a six-game losing streak.
"That was the most runs we have scored in an inning this year," said Pruett. "Our guys really hit the ball today."
Hit the ball they did, as the Tigers pounded out 13 hits against the Eagles (3-14; 1-10).
Chase Williams led Dawson's offense. He went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored. Williams wasn't the only Tiger that hit the ball against Riverside. Cody Marshall, Josh Harper and Kaleb Kicklighter also turned in multi-hit performances.
Chase Gilreath was strong on the mound for the Tigers.
Gilreath surrendered three runs, only two of them earned, in a 6-inning performance. The senior, who has signed with Columbus State, recorded eight strikeouts in his fifth win of the season.
Freshman Jeff Partington pitched the final inning in his varsity debut. Partington gave up four runs, but only two were earned.
Pruett was able to clear his bench, after Dawson held a commanding 10-3 lead after six innings.
"It was really nice to be able to get everyone in the game," said Pruett.
Dawson began the scoring in the second inning after a lead off double by Williams. With one out, Kicklighter singled Willams home to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers put the game out of reach in the third inning. Marshall reached base on an error at second base. Consecutive hits by Gilreath, Harper and Williams tallied three runs extending their lead to 4-1.
The inning continued with an RBI double by Kicklighter and an RBI single by Dylan Garrett to give Dawson a comfortable 6-1 advantage.
Dawson added two runs in the fourth and a single run in the sixth to take the victory.
The Tigers are currently 6-9 on the season and 4-7 in Region 8-AA. The team must win eight of its last nine games to qualify for post-season play.
Pruett's team is currently in seventh place in the region standings. Jefferson (14-1; 11-0) has the region lead with North Oconee (13-2; 8-1) biting on their heels in second place.
The team has a busy week ahead.
The Tigers had a game yesterday at Fannin County. Results were not available at press time.
Dawson will host East Jackson in an important doubleheader this Friday in Dawsonville. First pitch will be at 5 p.m.
The team will also be at home against Rabun County next Tuesday, April 20 for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
