Head Coach Rick Corwin and his Lady Tiger soccer team had a very successful week.

Despite losing to a very skilled Gainesville team, 2-1, on Tuesday, the team bounced back to shutout Gilmer County, 4-0, on Wednesday, and Rabun County, 3-0, on Friday.

The Lady Tigers currently stand at 4-3-1 overall. The team will participate in the Jekyll Island Tournament of Champions this weekend.

“I was very pleased with our overall efforts against Gainesville,” Corwin said. “I thought they were the superior team, but that we matched their energy in the second half, if not their skill, and gave a good account of ourselves.”

Gainesville got on the scoreboard first with a shot from Junior Raquel Castillo.

The blast put the Lady Elephants on top 1-0 at the 29:45 mark of the first half.

The No. 8-ranked Gainesville added another goal in the second half by Castillo to take a 2-0 lead.

Dawson never gave up. The Lady Tigers made the score 2-1 on a penalty kick, but it wasn’t enough as Gainesville (4-3) came away with the victory.

Corwin said: “After the penalty kick brought us within a goal, it appeared that our girls started to believe that they could compete, which could be potentially a watershed event for us.

“We were missing two senior starters for the game, but I felt that the replacements, and the rest of the team, really elevated themselves to compensate. I thought our goalkeeper, Lindsey Vinson, was outstanding, particularly on breakaways and in the air. Our ghost, Ashley Avery, did a superb job of shadowing their number 10.”
