The Dawson County High School softball team went 2-2-1 at the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational softball tournament last week. The tournament was played at West Jackson Park in Hoschton.
The Lady Tigers got a chance to play some bigger schools with a lot of talent.
Head Coach Jimmy Pruett's team began the tournament Aug. 15 with a game against Winder-Barrow. The game was called because of the time limit and ended in a 3-3 tie.
Friday night saw Dawson County match-up with two very tough teams: Dacula and South Forsyth.
Both games were close but the Lady Tigers came away with two losses. The team fell to Dacula, 4-2 and South Forsyth, 3-0.
Saturday was a different story.
The team won both games over Gainesville, 11-0 and Apalachee, 5-4.
The Lady Tigers currently have an overall record of 7-4-1.
"We played OK," Pruett said. "I really felt like we should have won every game. Going 2-2-1 against Class AAAAA and Class AAAAAA schools is nothing to be ashamed of."
Offensively, the Lady Tigers were led by senior Jenna Abbott.
In five games, Abbott batted .500. She went 7-for-14 with two home runs, four doubles and five RBIs. Abbott hit homers against Gainesville and Apalachee during Saturday's play. The homer against Gainesville traveled an estimated 280-feet according to coaches.
Lady Tiger Joy Lewis hit the ball hard the entire tournament against some really good pitching, according to Pruett.
Lewis was 8-for-15 with a double, RBI and four runs.
Tabitha Morrison also had a good tournament at the plate.
Morrison was 5-for-15 with a double, triple, RBI, and scored five runs.
Junior Martie Rogers contributed as well. She went 5-for-14 at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and scored three runs.
"We are really tired [after] playing 12 games in eight days, but I think it will make us stronger when we get to region play," Pruett said.
"I thought all three of our pitchers threw the ball well. Jenna (Abbott), Martie (Rogers) and Joy (Lewis) all pitched some good innings," he added.
Rogers pitched well against South Forsyth. She gave up only three runs in the 3-0 loss.
Against Apalachee she picked up the complete game win. The junior went seven innings and gave up only seven hits, while recording three strikeouts and one walk.
Lewis picked up a complete game shutout in Saturday's first game against Gainesville.
Lewis surrendered only two hits in five innings of work in the 11-0 victory.
Abbott is still limited to pitching only 3 innings per start due to a shoulder injury.
Pruett said he does see some progress with his team.
"I think we are progressing well. We are sore and tired right now, and when we get everyone healthy I will feel a lot better," he said.
Dawson County has only one game this week, against Class A powerhouse Mt. Pisgah Christian at home on Wednesday.
First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
