The Lady Tiger basketball team opened the season with two big wins over neighboring Lumpkin County last week.

On Nov. 27, Dawson County opened the season with a huge win over the Lady Indians, 49-26, in Dahlonega.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers held on to take a close 38-34 decision over Coach Scott Hallams' Lady Indians.

Dawson County opened the scoring on Nov. 27 with a long three-pointer from senior point guard Carly Gilreath.

Gilreath had a game-high 18 points in the season opener.

She was also perfect from the free throw line, going 4-for-4.

Sophomore post player Sheyenne Seabolt also had a solid game. She scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Freshman Karlie Bearden scored her first points as a varsity player. Bearden finished with two points.

"We played OK for the first game. It was a rival game and on the road. We have plenty of stuff to work on, but it is always nice to start off with a win," said head coach Steve Sweat.

Scoring: Carly Gilreath - 18 points, Sheyenne Seabolt - 9 points, Whitney Glover - 6 points, Ashley Parker - 5 points, Kacie Bearden - 3 points, Madison Shope - 2 points, Alison Honea - 2 points, Kenna Seitz - 2 points and Karlie Bearden - 2 points.

On Saturday, Dawson County was in control at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Tigers were dominate in every area of the game, and held a 35-19 lead.

Lumpkin County came out on fire in the final quarter and cut the Dawson County lead to 37-34 with only 56 seconds remaining.

The Lady Indians had to foul to stop the clock.

Lady Tiger Gilreath stepped up to the line and converted one of two charity shots to expand the score to 38-34.

Parker came up with a big steal with only 15 seconds to go.

Parker passed the ball to Gilreath who was promptly fouled again.

Gilreath, normally a lethal free throw shooter, missed the front end of the one and one.

Lumpkin County secured the rebound and tried to pass down court. Allie Costley stepped in the passing lane and came up with a steal that sealed the win for Dawson County.

Lady Tiger post player Seabolt had a great game, according to Sweat.

Seabolt recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Gilreath also scored in double figures with 11 points.

"We were able to pull out a win over a very determined Lady Indian team tonight. We played pretty good and had a comfortable lead in the first half," Sweat said.

Lady Tiger scorers: Seabolt - 15 points, Gilreath - 11 points, Parker - 8 points; Glover - 3 points and Bearden - 1 point.

Up next for Dawson County will be a visit from Region 7-AAA foe Banks County. Tip-off for the game with the Lady Leopards will be at 7 p.m.

Saturday will be Park and Recreation Night at the Ford E. Phillips gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers will play host to Pacelli High School from Columbus. Game time will be 6 p.m.
