The Dawson County High School girls tennis team opened the season with a 3-2 win over Fannin County last week.

Lady Tiger Hannah Velcoff easily won her match with an 8-0 win over her opponent. Even though Dawson lost the #2 and #3 singles matches the Lady Tigers were able to dominate the doubles matches.

Sarah Anglin and Lora Brown won 8-0 over the Lady Rebels. Dawson partners Hannah Porter and Whitney Glover also won 8-1 to give the Lady Tigers the win.

“Chloe Beacham played number two singles and this is only her third year playing tennis. Chloe made some great shots and played well. Morgan Williams played third singles for us. Morgan has never played singles until this year and did well for her first match,” said Head Coach Jamey Bearden.

“I’m very proud of our girls’ performance. We only have four returning players, (Hannah Velcoff, Chloe Beacham, Lora Brown and Kristen Goswick), from last season and the rest of the girls are new to tennis. We have only practiced for two weeks. They are improving each day and all of them are natural athletes.

“The experienced players are excellent players and have been offering great tips and advice to the newcomers. They all seem very excited and eager about playing tennis and they can only improve as the season continues,” Bearden added.

Members of this year’s team are: Hayley Adams, Brittany Adams, Sarah Anglin, Chloe Beacham, Courtney Blair, Lora Brown, Natalie Burt, Whitney Glover, Kristen Goswick, Kristi Hyams, Hannah Porter, Emma Salmela, Hannah Velcoff and Morgan Williams.

The Lady Tigers will play host to Rabun County at 4 p.m. Thursday.
