The Dawson County High School girls’ tennis team traveled to East Hall last week and defeated the Lady Vikings 3-2 in the first Region 8-AA match of the season.

Hannah Velcoff won at number one singles. She defeated Marissa Thompson from East Hall, 6-2, 6-3.

“Hannah played very well. She had a very strong serve and played an

excellent match against her opponent,” said Head Coach Jamey Bearden.

Despite losing at number two and number three singles, the Lady Tigers rebounded to sweep the doubles matches and picking up the team win.

First doubles Lora Brown and Sarah Anglin won their match 6-4, 6-1.

“Lora’s serve dominated and she was really on her game. Sarah played great at the net, making some strategic shots. Both girls are very competitive and played great together,” Bearden said.

The number two doubles team of Hannah Porter and Kristi Hyams dominated their match, winning 6-2, 6-1.

“They are also an amazing team. They definitely used their height to their advantage by making several power shots that their opponents could not return,” Bearden said.

Losing at number two and three singles were Whitney Glover and Emma Salmela. Bearden said she was still pleased with their play.

“This is only their fourth week playing tennis and both Whitney and Emma did very well for the amount of experience they have and don’t have. Both girls are natural athletes and I expect them to keep improving,” Bearden said.

The Lady Tigers also played some doubles exhibition matches. Picking up wins were: Kristen Goswick and Morgan Williams, Brittany Adams and Natalie Burt, and Hayley Adams and Courtney Blair.
