Lady Tigers Carly Gilreath and Allie Costley both notched double digits in scoring at Union County last Friday night.

Gilreath and Costley scored 10 points each, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Tigers dropped a 56-41 decision to the Lady Panthers in the Region 8A-AA game.

With the loss Dawson County moved its record to 10-9 overall, but more importantly the team dropped to 1-3 in region play.

The Lady Panthers are currently 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the region.

Both teams jumped out to a quick start offensively in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers seemed to find an answer to the Dawson defense and posted 18 points in the first eight minutes of play to take an 8 point lead into the second quarter.

Head Coach Steve Sweat told his team to step up the defensive pressure in the second quarter.

The Lady Tigers responded and clamped down on the Lady Panthers, limiting them to only 4 points in the quarter.

Dawson held a slim 23-22 advantage at halftime in front of a loud and boisterous crowd in Blairsville.

Union County came out of the locker room after halftime on fire offensively.

The Lady Panthers scored 20 points in the third quarter and allowed the Lady Tigers only 6 points to take a commanding 42-29 advantage.

Even though both teams played evenly in the final quarter, the Lady Panthers were able to hold on for the 16-point win.

In addition to Costley's 10 points, she also pulled down 9 rebounds for Sweat's team.

Lauren Zollinger scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Panthers. Seniors Rebecka Merrit and Callie Payne finished with 15 and 12 points respectively for Union County.

The Lady Tigers will play at 7 p.m. Friday at home against East Hall.

As of press time, the Lady Vikings are currently 15-2 and 4-0 in region play.

The game will also be homecoming for Dawson County.

A couple of weeks ago the Lady Tigers dropped a 60-43 decision to East Hall.

Next Tuesday the team will travel to Fannin County for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
