Coach Steve Sweat and the Dawson County Lady Tigers continue to struggle as the team dropped two games last week.

The team has currently lost five straight games and has a 2-7 overall record.

Friday, the Lady Tigers played host to North Oconee in the team’s first Region 8-AA game of the year. The Lady Tigers just couldn’t get jump started offensively and lost 52-27 to the Lady Titans.

“We dug ourselves a hole and could not get out of it,” Sweat said about the game.

North Oconee only led 7-6 after the first quarter.

However, the second quarter was a different matter as the Lady Titans poured it on offensively.

The turnover bug hit Dawson County in the quarter, which allowed North Oconee to outscore the Lady Tigers 19-7 to hold a commanding 26-13 lead at halftime.

The Lady Tigers could never recover as North Oconee continued to hit on all cylinders offensively in the final two quarters.

The Lady Titans dominated. North Oconee scored 26 points to Dawson’s 14.

Jessi Phillips was high scorer for the Lady Tigers with 6 points.

Brooke Satterfield led North Oconee with 12 points.

Saturday night the team traveled to Fairmount to play second-year school Sonoraville. The Lady Tigers put up a good fight, but fell just short 52-47.

Dawson came out flat to begin the game and trailed 14-7 after one quarter.

The Lady Tigers got going offensively in the second quarter.

Dawson outscored the Lady Phoenix 15-5 to take a lead into the locker-room at halftime.

“We finally had a lead against somebody at half. Our kids did a really good job in the second quarter,” said Sweat.

The Lady Tigers still maintained a slim advantage, 31-29, after three quarters of play.

Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, things turned sour in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers got into foul trouble and put Sonoraville on the free throw line.

Dawson had three players foul out in the last quarter. Christian Daniel, Judith Hall and Jessi Phillips were lost to the Lady Tigers when they accumulated to many personal fouls.

The Phoenix shot 42 free throws, and made 21.

Sonoraville outscored the Lady Tigers in the final quarter 23-16 to take the 6-point victory.

“Our defense fouled too much and we gave up 21 points from the FT line. It was a big difference in the game,” Sweat remarked.

Morgan Bennett and Jessi Phillips both had monster games for the Lady Tigers.

Bennett finished with 15 points, while Phillips contributed 14 points in the loss.

Erika Thomas led Sonoraville with 19 points.

“We have had a tough run in the last two weeks. We must cut down on our turnovers and make our shots in the lane to beat the teams we have to play. We will practice hard over the holidays to fix the things we must do to win,” Sweat said.

Dawson County will be back in action Jan. 6 when the team will travel to Oglethorpe County.

Tip-off will be at 6 p.m.
