The Dawson County High School junior varsity boys basketball team came away with a close win against Union County on Feb. 5. Head Coach Wes Greer’s team defeated the Panthers, 42-40.

Grant Shope was the offensive star with 18 points. All of Shope’s points came from 3-pointers. He sank six of them during the game.

“We had a big lead going into the fourth quarter, then made some silly turnovers and missed several free throws that would have sealed the game,” said Greer.

The junior varsity team is currently 8-6, with one more game to be played against Rabun County.

The ninth grade boys finished in second place at the North Oconee tournament last weekend, finishing up the team’s season. They lost in the final to Cedar Shoals, 44-43. The team had a chance at the buzzer, but a shot fell just short.

Josh Scaife led the Tigers in scoring in the championship game with 13 points.

Dawson defeated North Oconee in the semi-finals, 53-32, to advance to the final game.

Koby Rogers led the freshman boys with nine points against North Oconee.
