The Dawson County Tiger varsity wrestling team opened the season in impressive fashion at West Forsyth Friday evening.

 

The Tigers defeated two AAAAA squads in Duluth, 52-20, and Mill Creek, 42-33, before losing to 2010 AAA state runner-up West Forsyth 45-33 in a very close match.

 

The team have a match today at Fannin County with Fannin, Robbinsville, N.C. and Murphy, N.C. Results were unavailable at press time.

 

The Tigers will travel to Towns County Nov. 30 for a match beginning at 4:30 p.m.

 

Head Coach Arron Haynes’ team was tied with West Forsyth, 33-33, after 12 weight classes, but two pins in the final two weights handed the Tigers a narrow defeat.

 

Winning by way of pin against West Forsyth were: Jaziel Bustamante (heavyweight), Levi Pressley (130), David Wood (135), Andrew Lovingood (145), Preston Adams (152) and Kyle Maciolek (160).

 

James Evans won at 119-pounds in a 4-0 decision.

 

In the second match, against Duluth, several Tiger wrestlers picked up wins. 

Anthony Underwood (103), Andrew Hinton (112), James Evans (119), Timothy Blythe (125), David Wood (135), Charlie Short (140), Kyle Maciolek (160), JT Stokes (171) and Evan Kells (189).

 

Against a tough Mill Creek team, several Tigers won by way of pin, including Underwood (103), Evans (119), Wood (135), Lovingood (145) and Adams (152).

 

Picking up wins by way of forfeit were Josh Gee (189) and Tobie Lumpkin (215).

 

Before the matches at West Forsyth, Haynes named this season’s team captains.

 

Juniors Preston Adams and Jared Stokes will serve as captains for the 2010-2011 team.

 

Members of this year’s squad are:

 

Seniors - Timothy Blythe, Jaziel Bustamante, Andrew Hinton, Kyle Maciolek, Casey McGinnis and David Wood.

 

Juniors - Preston Adams, Travis Dawson, James Evans, Josh Gee, Travis Rise, Charlie Short, JT Stokes and Zach Wilkins.

 

Sophomores - Cory Jenkins, Evan Kells, Dan Maciolek, Paige Reece (manager), Afina Walton (manager), Levi Pressley, Anthony Underwood, Taylor Willoughby (manager) and Sydney Woodcock (manager).

 

Freshmen - Chris Alewin, Austin Anastasio, Michael Ayers, Colton Chester, Greg Geisel, Zach Green, Coty Greer, Zach Guy, Kevin Holtzclaw, Ryan Jones, Andrew Lovingood and Tobie Lumpkin.
