Grapplers win local tourney

Coach Arron Haynes' Dawson County Tiger wrestlers won the team championship at the Amicalola Classic last month at Dawson County High School.

The Tigers scored 268 team points to easily outdistance runner-up Chattooga High School who had 197.5 points.

There were seven schools that took part in the event. Finishing in third place was East Hall (178 points), fourth was East Jackson (143 points), fifth Murphy, N.C. (112.5 points), Fannin County (77 points) and Towns with 73 points.

On Dec. 28 each team wrestled in four dual matches.

Dawson County easily won its four matches. The Tigers defeated Fannin, 63-10, Murphy, 63-17, East Jackson, 56-17 and Chattooga, 45-29.

The action on Dec. 29 saw wrestlers matched up in a tournament bracket dependent on weight class.

Winning the title in their weight class for Dawson County were: Cory Jenkins (132 pounds), Evan Kells (170 pounds) and Gavin Brown (182 pounds).

Finishing in second place were Tigers: Anthony Underwood (113 pounds), Harrison Adams (126 pounds), Levi Pressley (145 pounds), Zach Guy (160 pounds) and Colton Chester (220 pounds).

Third place medals were awarded to Justin Evans (106 pounds), Coty Greer (138 pounds) and Brett Whalen (195 pounds).

Connor McGrew took fourth place for Dawson County in the 285-pound weight class.

Also wrestling, but not placing, for Haynes' team was Quade Buytendorp at 120 pounds.
