The Dawson County girls' soccer team opened the season with wins over Winder-Barrow, 7-0, on Feb. 10 and North Forsyth, 2-0, Feb. 13.

Coach Jed Lacey's team is currently ranked No, 7 in the latest Class AAA rankings.

In the Tuesday game, MacKenzie Callas scored a hat trick with two goals in the first half and one goal to open the second half.

The assists were by Tina Libao and two by Taylor Bennett.

Dawson County broke the game open scoring five second half goals.

Scoring, beside Callas, were Libao, Ivonne Maldonado, Bennett and McKay Shively. Picking up assists were Bennett with four and Brooke Cagle.

Anela Melton had a shutout in goal.

"I thought we did a better job tonight to open the season with a new formation," Lacey said. "We didn't play as fast as I like but that will come. I was very proud of Mackenzie Callas in her development in just one year."

All 21 varsity players got on the pitch in the game.

Bennett scored both goals in Friday's win over North Forsyth. Bennett scored her first goal at 28:56 in the first half and added her second with 2:36 left in the game. Shively picked up the assist on the first goal.

Melton recorded her second shutout of the season in goal.

"I'm totally unhappy with this game. We have not played this badly in three years," Lacey said.

"Taylor (Bennett) was pretty much the offense tonight. Our center backs, Devon Coates and Jessica Chambers did a good job holding back any kind of rush that North Forsyth came at us."
