The Dawson County High School fishing club got a jump start
on the 2017-18 season last week when it participated in an early bird tournament
at Little Hall in Gainesville.
Several of the students from Dawson County placed even with the hot conditions and 78 boats participating.
“It was not a points tournament, but prizes were awarded to the top 10 teams,” said Donna Melton, sponsor of the club at DCHS.
Dawson County Middle School students C.J. Hudson and Elijah Benson weighed in at 10.23 pounds and took first place.
Kristian Kelley and Hudson Sapp of DCHS won sixth place at 7.05 pounds and Tyler Sams and Brendan Boggus were 10th at 6.88 pounds.
The early season event was designed to get teams oriented to the format and rules as laid out by the Georgia High School Fishing Trail, according to Melton.
“This year the trail is allowing something new,” she said. “Students in seventh through 12th grade are now allowed to fish the trail.”
The was a three fish limit during the Sept. 24 event.
The first points tournament is coming up Oct. 15 at Lanier
Little Hill Park.
