The Dawson County High School swim team season opened with sophomore Matthew Wood qualifying for state in the first meet of the year.
Wood swam the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 56.50 seconds on Nov. 16 at Calhoun.
“He swam that event at last year’s state meet as well,” said Coach Linda Sperin.
“We had some really good finishes and times at both meets,” she said. “Swimmers improved their times and that is what we are striving for.”
This year’s team has five returning from last season and saw the addition of six more, including three girls.
Remaining events for the 2017 season will be on Dec. 5 and 14 and Sperin said she is hoping to challenge her inexperienced team.
“Some swimmers will be swimming events that they haven’t ever swam before,” Sperin said. “I am trying to push them to swim some events that are more difficult and longer yardage.”
Overall Sperin is happy with the improvement she has seen.
Swimmers on this year’s team include: Nathan Frazier, Will Mulberry, Garrett Perez, Matias Lara, Carter Rexroat, Grace Shippey, Hayden Starr, Kara Starr, Logan Starr, Wood and Anna Mulberry.
