Nicole Mulkey, a senior at Dawson County High School, was recently earned a spot on the Georgia All-State cheer team.
Mulkey was one of 16 athletes to earn a spot on the team over 138 applicants.
The Georgia Cheerleading Coaches Association selected the Top 40 athletes to compete on Aug. 4. The competitors were judged 25 percent on application, 25 percent on interview and 50 percent on performance.
According to Coach Kim Fleming, the performance included all elements of a competition routine: jumps, tumbling, stunting, cheer, chant and dance.
The Cheerleader of the Year will be selected on Nov. 4 from the All-State Cheer team at the GHSA state finals in Columbus. Nicole will receive a small scholarship for earning a spot on the team from the GCCA.
Kiara Marshall also represented Dawson County as a Top 40 athlete. She had an injury on Thursday before the competition and it limited the skills she could perform.
“I am very proud of both athletes,” Fleming said. “They both represented Dawson County well.”
