The inaugural season of the Dawson County Mountain Biking team kicked off on Sunday, Sept. 13 at their first ever race in Acworth, Ga.
The Dawson County team includes 11 racers and 10 coaches. Previously, the Forsyth County team included a few Dawson County racers, but after popularity began to grow in Dawson County and head coach Mark Legaspi decided to start Dawson’s very own team.
Divisions are divided by age and gender. Out of the ten Dawson County racers who competed in the race, one raced in the men’s junior varsity group and one raced in the women’s junior varsity group.
Carly Sutton finished fifth in the women’s junior varsity race with a final time of 28:11.8. Kyle Frederick represented Dawson County in the men’s junior varsity race. He finished with a final time of 23:48.4, which ended up being the fastest time by any member of the Dawson County Composite team at Sunday’s race.
Talen Sorace finished 12th in the eighth-grade boy's division, with a final time of 23:53.1 on the 4.5-mile track. Lance Hacker finished 19th for eighth-grade boys with a final time of 24:31.6. Nick Smith also raced in the eighth-grade boys division, finishing with a time of 28:02.1
Ava Legaspi was the only Dawson County racer in the seventh-grade girl's division. She finished 12th overall with a final time of 31:54.5. The only Dawson County racer in the seventh-grade boys division, Collin Sutton finished ninth overall with a final time of 25:06.2.
Anderson Trapnell, Misha Garcia and Evan Thompson all competed in the sixth-grade boys division. Trapnell finished with a final time of 32:24.5 and Garcia finished right behind him, with a final time of 32:49.8. Thompson finished with a final time of 35:54.3.
The Dawson County Composite team will race in four more races this season. The next race will be on Saturday, Sept. 26 in Rome, Ga.
