Dawson County High School Lady Tiger senior golfer Madison Caldwell claimed the Class AAA state championship as the low medalist Monday at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell.

The Western Carolina University signee shot a 73 over the 18-hole event, defeating second place finisher Clara Hulsey from Sonoraville High School by five strokes.

Hulsey shot a 78.

Rain hampered the tournament throughout the day.

Intermittent thunderstorms caused play to halt on more than one occasion.

With little light remaining in the day, Head Coach Wes Greer celebrated the state title with his star golfer.

"It was a long exhausting day," Greer said. "But in the end it was worth the wait to see Maddie finally win the state championship. She had seen it elude her twice before. I am so proud of her and the entire team."

As a team, the Lady Tigers finished in seventh place with a score of 298. Winning the state title was Calhoun High School who completed the very tough course with a 261.

"The team had a great time and played their hearts out on a tough course in tougher conditions. Real proud of all the girls and how they played," Greer said.

Sydney Morgan shot a 103, Hannah McConnell shot a 122 and Tatum Pruitt finished with a 141.

The top three scores count toward the final team score.
