Madison Caldwell captured the individual title at the Region 7-AAA golf tournament last week at Scales Golf Course in Homer.

Caldwell completed the 18-hole event with a two over par 74 to win the Region against 23 other golfers on April 22.

"Madison did a great job putting the ball in the fairways and on the greens in regulation. Madison stayed out of trouble by striking the ball well and really reading the greens. Her steady play and long drives off the tee made it easy for her to shoot as well as she did," said Head Coach Wes Greer.

Caldwell will automatically qualify for the Class AAA state championship tournament that will be held May 20 at Chateu Elan in Braselton.

"Madison had two chances at holes in ones. On hole 12 the ball hit the flag stick and fell to the left side of the green. On hole 17, the ball flew over the flag spun back and stopped on the lip of the cup. It was a windy day and I was hoping the wind would knock it in before she could mark the ball," Greer said.

After Caldwell won the title, Greer and his team jumped into the lake at Scales Creek.

"It was well worth it to see her win. After we got out of the water, she asked if I would jump in the lake at Chateau Elan if she won the state championship. I said of course I would," he said.

Greer said he is proud of the effort put in by the entire team.

"I do want to say I was extremely proud of all my girls that played on Monday. Besides Maddie, my team is made up of true beginners and one returning to golf after not playing for quite some time. We did not have great scores, but the girls had a great time," he said.
